چکیده

A search was conducted for TeV -rays emitted from the direction of the ultra–high-energy cosmic ray detected by the Fly’s Eye experiment with energy E 3 1020 eV. No enhancement was found at a level of 10 10 cm 2 s 1 for E > 350 GeV. A steady source of ultra–high-energy cosmic ray protons or photons would be expected to produce a -ray flux above this level. An upper limit was also set for the flux of TeV -rays from 3C 147, the most prominent active galactic nucleus in the error box. Subject heading: cosmic rays — galaxies: active — galaxies: individual (3C 147) — gamma rays: observations

VERITAS Observations of the Arrival Directions of the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays

The recent discovery by the Pierre Auger collaboration of anisotropy in the arrival directions of the highest energy cosmic rays, correlated with the positions of nearby active galactic nuclei [1, 2], encourages the search for counterpart TeV gammaray emission. Approximately half of the sky viewed by the southern hemisphere Pierre Auger experiment is also visible at reasonable elevations for th...

Centaurus A, the cosmic ray accelerator a few Mpc away from us is one of the nearest sources of extremely high energy cosmic rays. It would be interesting to see whether the gamma ray data currently available from Centaurus A in the GeV-TeV energy band can be explained with only proton proton interactions. We show that to be consistent with the gamma ray luminosity observed in the GeV-TeV energ...

Prompt Gev-tev Emission of Gamma-ray Bursts Due to High-energy Protons, Muons and Electron-positron Pairs

In the framework of the internal shock scenario, we model the broadband prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with emphasis on the GeV-TeV bands, utilizing Monte Carlo simulations that include various processes associated with electrons and protons accelerated to high energies. While inverse Compton emission from primary electrons is often dominant, different proton-induced mechanisms can ...

Detectors for Cosmic Rays on Ground and in Space ∗

The origin of the cosmic rays has been a great mystery since they were discovered by Victor Hess in 1912. AGASA’s observation of ultra-high-energy cosmic-rays (UHECR) possibly beyond the GZK (Greisen, Zatsepin and Kuzmin) cutoff stimulated the field in great deal. In addition, Kamiokande’s detection of neutrinos from SN1987A and the H.E.S.S.’s detection of TeV gamma-rays from supernova remnants...
